Another consequence of chronic stress is the activation of latent viruses, when certain viruses take up residence in the body indefinitely after infection. The latent activation of a virus can result in the loss of immune control over it . And when this becomes frequent, it can cause wear and tear on the immune system.
When stress “dysregulates” the immune system, we become more susceptible to a range of “threats,” including autoimmune, inflammatory, infectious, and allergic diseases.
